When Heels Crack

By Carl Hankal

Damaged feet, also referred to as foot fissures, are a common problem for many individuals. This is especially true while in the dry cold months. Split heels are a result of dryness along with build up of calluses. Almost everyone has partially dried out feet together with at least a bit of callus build up, which is typical. This is generally just an annoyance or an aesthetic problem. Without treatment though, it can turn into a unpleasant situation.

The calluses can get too deep then can start to fracture. If your splits or fissures grow to be too deep they could be really agonizing, and may also bleed or get infected. Once you have a substantially dense callus accumulation, running or even walking could provoke it to start splitting.

There are lots of reasons that can induce your feet to dry up and start thickening. The winter season can be notoriously recognized for dehydrating people's skin, particularly in desert places. Make sure you are always consuming plenty of water to help fight this issue.

Excessive hot baths or showers can leach our bodies of fluid. Many soaps may also get rid of natural oils upon our skin which hold moisture in. Finally, failing to take proper care of your feet by moisturizing them often enough can result in dry skin.

If you want to avoid cracked feet moisturize your feet consistently, at least once daily. Drink plenty of water and abstain from taking a shower too often and in scalding hot water. Using pumice stones or other exfoliates may eliminate dead skin cells from your feet preventing calluses.

Treatments consist of skin medications as well as hydrating products. Be sure to moisturize thoroughly and cover up with bandages or a sock. The cover can help secure the moisture in. There's also customized insoles to redistribute tension while you walk to help keep skin from splitting.

It is important if you're diabetic to examine your feet daily because it is possible to get infections in cracked heels which could result in a lot more problems for diabetes sufferers. For everyone else, cracked feet are totally treatable, and most instances can be taken care of right in your own home.
