A
morning walk through what I jokingly refer to as the farm, my
collection of raised beds, all seemed to be doing well. Green plants
is spewing from the topsoil and composted Bunnie berries.
The
alternative raised bed as described in a Blake Holliday book is
planted with potatoes, it seems they are jumping up and out of the
bedding. And the “Mid 30” is my salad greens raised bed. I
started out with the intent of blending “Squared Foot Gardening”
and “French Intensive Gardening” for a better planting. My
wildest hopes have been surpassed. That raised bed is practically a
solid block of salad greens and onions. I expect to start harvesting
salads in the next few days.
My
cost in this not much, the materials to build the raised beds were
recycled, the topsoil is leaf hummus from my woods and the Bunnie
berries from my rabbits. The 30 square foot bed was planted with
about 2.50 dollars of seeds from the chain store. With the cost of a
yucky store bought salad hovering about 4.99 at the AK based
superstore chain, I can see that I'll pocket a lot of cash over
spring and summer.
It
took about 2 hours to build and fill the raised bed. And another 15
minutes to plant it. For nominal effort and expense you will reap a
reward of chemical free produce.
