Family Law: The Top 3 Most Famous Divorce Cases

By Alison Beech

Being embroiled in a family law case can be very upsetting for the parents and children involved, as it often ends with a fundamental shift in the lifestyle of each member of the family.

It can lead to a huge change in lifestyle for those mixed up in the issue, often causing savings, estates and possessions to be divided, not to mention the custody of children.

While this can be a very upsetting experience for the family, usually they at least have the opportunity to let the case play out behind closed doors.

This is not something that can be said for celebrities, who have to deal with what seems like the whole world discussing their personal troubles when the news is announced on front pages of tabloids and magazines.

Here is our list of the top five most talked-about divorce cases in recent history:

- McCartney/Mills - Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney married ex-model Heather Mills in 2002, four years after the death of his first wife Linda. Much of the general public believed Mills was in the relationship for one thing only: money. However, they remained married for five years, with no pre-nuptial agreement in place, before they separated and filed for divorce. Despite asking for 125 million at the start of proceedings, Mills was eventually awarded 24.3 million, with payments of 35,000 per year to go contribute to essentials for her daughter.

- Madonna/Guy Ritchie - The queen of pop and her partner, film director Guy Ritchie, were wed in 2000 only to separate eight years later, with Madonna citing irreconcilable differences. Ritchie was believed to have received up to 60 million in the divorce settlement.

- Prince Charles/Lady Diana - Diana Spencer became Diana, Princess of Wales when she married Prince Charles in 1981 before a worldwide TV audience of 750 million. However, in the 1990s problems began to surface, which were then exposed by the UK media. Both parties were said to have had affairs. The divorce process was much more complex in this case as it required backing of the Queen and parliament. The couple were divorced in 1996, with Diana receiving a lump sum of around 17 million.

These are just some of the high-profile divorce cases that we have received a lot of press coverage over the past couple of years, and there are, of course, many more that we haven't mentioned here - the late Elizabeth Taylor, for example, who was divorced EIGHT times.
